Les premières pierres du château furent posées au XIVème siècle, modernisé au XVIème siècle à une époque où la Provence, récemment rattachée au royaume de France, connaissait une ère de renouveau architectural et culturel. Construit initialement comme une bastide fortifiée, le domaine fut peu à peu transformé, demeure seigneuriale, reflet du goût raffiné des générations qui s’y succédèrent.
Au fil des siècles, le Château d’Artigues connut embellissements et transformations : une aile classique fut ajoutée au XVIIe siècle, de vastes jardins à la française furent dessinés au XVIIIe, puis, à l’époque romantique, des allées ombragées et des essences méditerranéennes vinrent adoucir le paysage. Le château traversa la Révolution, l’Empire et les guerres, souvent abandonné, parfois habité, mais toujours debout, fidèle sentinelle de son terroir.
Aujourd’hui, le Château d’Artigues renaît avec grâce. Restauré dans le respect de son histoire, il accueille voyageurs, hôtes de passage et amoureux du patrimoine. Nestled in the heart of the luminous landscapes of Provence, between rolling vineyards and sun-drenched hills, Château d’Artigues has embodied the elegance and serenity of the South of France for centuries. Its name, derived from the Occitan word “artiga,” which designates a cleared and cultivated land, reflects its rural origins and its intimate connection with the earth.
The first stones of the castle were laid in the 14th century, modernized in the 16th century during a time when Provence, recently annexed to the Kingdom of France, was experiencing an era of architectural and cultural renewal. Initially built as a fortified bastide, the estate was gradually transformed into a lordly residence, reflecting the refined taste of the generations that succeeded one another.
Over the centuries, Château d’Artigues underwent embellishments and transformations: a classical wing was added in the 17th century, vast French gardens were designed in the 18th century, and during the romantic era, shaded pathways and Mediterranean species softened the landscape. The castle weathered the Revolution, the Empire, and wars, often abandoned, sometimes inhabited, but always standing tall, a faithful sentinel of its terroir.
